The essay “Fish Cheeks” written by Amy Tan is written about a young Chinese girl who is this passage remains nameless. The girl has a crush on the minister's son. On Christmas Eve her parents invite the minister’s family over for dinner, the whole time the girl is embarrassed by her family’s food and manners. The thing that the girl was missing though is that she shouldn’t be embarrassed by her family or by the food because she shouldn’t be ashamed of who she is. He mother tells her this at the end of the passage and when the girl looks back on the event she realizes that all the food that her mother cooked that day were her favorite foods and that she shouldn’t let other people's views affect how she feels and lives her life.

The second essay is title “Superman and Me” written by Shermie Alexia which is my opinion was a far better short story than that of Amy's’. The story is based around a young Indian boy who teaches himself to read. He talks about how he started reading and how it got him to where he is today.The most significant part of the essay is the part about discrimination. He almost hides it in the text but it keeps ringing true throughout the whole novel. Throughout the whole thing Alexia says that he is trying to save them (the Indian kids) because in modern society everyone judges the Indians as idiots that cannot learn but that is not the case and he is trying to get the word out with this essay.
